Build the Big Ones Lab

Today in class we finally got to a a lab! It was called Build the Big Ones. The big ones refers to molecules with more than one central atom. The molecules we worked with were ethanol, acetic acid (vinegar), serine, and styrene. We had to build each molecule using spheres, wooden sticks , and metal springs. The wooden sticks represented a single bond and the metal springs represented double bonds. As explained in the directions, a black sphere is carbon, a yellow sphere is hydrogen, a red sphere is oxygen, and a light blue sphere is nitrogen. Here are the pictures for each molecule:

For each molecule we had to determine the central atom, the geometry of the atom, an example would be tetrahedral, the bond angle for that geometry and the hydridization. Here is what me and my partner Katie I. cam up with: build the bog ones 009

More About Gas Equations and...Ice Cream

We first started class off today by being told by Mr. Lieberman that we will not be doing our lab today, but we will be doing it on Monday instead.

Next we went over our pre-lab. I want to thank Matt P. with some help from Ben A. for explaining to us how to answer each question. Here is how to do them:

1) Make an equation to help find the pressure of hydrogen: 19.8+x=746 and when you solve for x you get 726.2 mmHg of H2.
2)Use your answer from #1 and you will make an equation following the form of PV/T=P2V2/T2. The equation is 726.2(31)/295=760V/273. Solve the equation for the volume of hydrogen at STP and you should get .274 L.
3)This is just a simple stoich problem: .028g Mg x 1 mole Mg/24.3g x 1 mole H2/1 mole Mg =.001167 moles of H2
4) Use your answers from numbers 2 and 3 to get the molar volume of hydrogen at STP: .274/.001167 = 23.5 L/ 1 mole.

Next, after going over the pre-lab, we continued going over notes. The main thing we talked about in our notes is that there are three equations that come from the equation PV=nRT. Those three equations are:
-PV=(g/mm)RT
-mmP/RT=g/v and g/v equals density
-mm=DRT/P~ a way is to remember this is dirty pee...get it..



Also, a reminder, make sure you are keeping up with your worksheets which are due on the day of the test which is on Friday, the day before break.

Then we did an awesome experiment that we were actually able to eat. We made chocolate ice cream! The ingredients were sugar, milk, whipping cream, chocolate syrup, and what made the magic happen, liquid nitrogen. It was and looked a little clumpy, but it actually tasted really good. And that was the end to another good day in chem.

Density and Excel

We started off class by being told by Mr. Lieberman that we will be going to the math lab very quickly so he can show us how to make our graphs for post lab question one for the density of pennies lab. You are supposed to go on microsoft excel and then fill in the the A column with the calculated volume of the pennies. We just did the pre 1982 pennies for now. Then in the B column you type in the mass of the pennies. After we put in the numbers we made a graph of the numbers and printed it out and we have to staple it or glue it in our lab books. To make the graphs we first highlighted the data. Then you click on the insert tab and click charts and choose a type of graph. Next to make the x axis say volume you click on the chart itself then click the layout tab and choose labels. Then click axis titles and it will say x axis and y axis and click on those to be able to make a label for the axis. We left the math lab and came back to the classroom and started talking about density.

Mr. Lieberman showed us an experiment about density and in the experiment he set two beakers up with clear liquids in each and they had approximately the same volume, but Mr. Lieberman never said they were both the same liquid. Next he dropped an ice cube in each beaker and immediately one ice cube sunk and the other floated. The reason why it sunk was because the ice cube had a greater density than the liquid. The other ice cube floated because it had a smaller density than the liquid.

Here are some things you should know about density: it measures how much mass there is a an amount of space which is volume. The way to calculate density is mass divided by volume. Also be sure you know how to calculate volume if you were given mass and density and how to calculate mass if you were given volume and density. There is a special triangle to help those of you who are 'algebraically challenged' that will help you remember these formulas. Just another regular day in sixth period chem.
